Winter Warden – an unconventional shirt that will last through many winters with you

6 min. reading

The winter season isn’t always harsh and snowy. More often than not, temperatures hover around 5-10°C, with cold winds and lingering humidity posing the real challenge. Our Winter Warden is here to guard your comfort in these conditions – when a heavy jacket is too much, but a windbreaker or anorak isn’t enough.

Inspired by the classic flannel shirts worn by loggers and trappers yet designed for modern-day challenges. The Winter Warden blends functionality with the rugged character of outdoor apparel. Whether on a camping trip, hiking expedition, or just heading out on a chilly day, this shirt has you covered.

Here are five reasons Winter Warden might become your go-to layer for winter adventures – whether as part of a layering system or a standalone outer layer.

A timeless plaid for unpredictable weather

Plaid patterns have connected different worlds for generations. From early forestry workers and the working class to rebels, grunge icons, and modern-day outdoor enthusiasts. No surprise there – the roots of this iconic pattern stretch back over 3,000 years! We offer a variety of plaid designs, but Winter Warden is our first winter shirt. We’ve introduced three distinctive patterns to stay true to the classic aesthetic. Which one will you choose?

Lightweight insulation that warms even when wet

The Winter Warden is made from quick-drying synthetic materials and features a lightweight yet highly insulating filling at 60 g/m². Depending on your activity level and personal heat retention, this outer layer can keep you comfortable in temperatures as low as 3-5°C.

Why did we choose synthetic insulation? Natural down is excellent at retaining heat, but when it gets wet, it loses its insulating properties – and drying it out takes time. In contrast, high-performance polyester fiber insulation works even when damp and dries much faster. This makes it ideal for bushcraft-oriented winter clothing, built to withstand cold, wet forest conditions.

Functional pockets – more than you expect (as always)

Your Winter Warden has seven practical pockets thoughtfully designed to keep your essentials secure and within easy reach. On the outside, you’ll find two classic chest pockets with snap closures and two large hand pockets lined with soft fleece for extra warmth. You can also quickly access the hidden Napoleon pocket with a YKK™ zipper from the outside. It’s ideal for safely storing your phone, wallet, documents, or other valuables. This pocket also features a loop attachment inside, allowing you to secure a compass or keys.

The shirt’s interior offers two zippered spacious mesh pockets. They are perfect for storing essential EDC items such as a first-aid kit, small tools, a flashlight, or a map. These pockets also serve another purpose. When you need to dry or warm up gloves or a beanie, tuck them inside and let your body heat do the rest.

Reinforced shoulder protection

The shoulders of any outdoor garment take the most wear – from constant exposure to rain and snow to the friction caused by backpacks. That’s why we reinforced the shoulder area of the Winter Warden with Versastretch®, a durable, weather-resistant fabric that prevents – or at least significantly delays – wear and moisture penetration.

Smart details for style and thermal comfort

One of the standout details of our winter shirt is its aesthetic snap buttons. We opted for snaps because they are quicker and easier to use than traditional buttons. On the other hand, a full zipper wouldn’t have fit the bushcraft aesthetic of the Winter Warden. Additionally, the adjustable cuffs come with discreet hook and loop straps. It makes it easy to roll up your sleeves or tighten them around your wrists to trap warmth when needed.

Winter Warden – the perfect middle ground

Too warm to be a regular shirt, too light to be a jacket? That’s exactly the point. The Winter Warden is designed to adapt to you – whether you’re a frequent hiker, bushcrafter, or looking for a solid and stylish option for chilly days. It works great as a standalone outer layer when conditions allow. However, it also integrates seamlessly into a layering system for more demanding environments.
