What will you need for camping, and why the answer is the Swagman Roll poncho?

6 min. reading

When it comes to camping gear, the Swagman Roll poncho stands out as an indispensable product. Its name pays homage to the swagmen, itinerant workers in Australia known for carrying rolled-up blankets on their backs. The poncho itself is derived from the U.S. Army’s poncho liner, which was introduced in the early 1960s.

This lightweight synthetic blanket could be tied to a poncho to create a patrol sleeping bag. It’s a solution that proved effective in the jungles of Vietnam. Soldiers quickly adapted it by adding zippers or buttons and cutting holes for their heads. It was leading to its popularity in survival and bushcraft communities due to its versatility. Based on these experiences, we developed our Swagman Roll. The poncho which combines traditional functionality with modern materials and design, making it essential for today’s travelers, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Versatility at its best

The Swagman Roll serves five primary functions, making it a versatile tool for outdoor adventures:

Poncho: Like a wind shirt, it protects against light rain and wind. Its elastic waistbands provide a snug fit for better insulation and comfort. Climashield Apex® insulation ensures warmth even when wet, which is ideal for unpredictable weather.

Sleeping Bag: As night falls, the Swagman Roll quickly transforms into a lightweight sleeping bag. By zipping its edges and securing the head opening, users can enjoy cozy sleep without needing a separate sleeping bag. Particularly useful during longer stops or camping trips.

Liner: It can serve as a liner for another sleeping bag, adding an extra layer of insulation against the elements.

Hammock underquilt: One unique application of the Swagman Roll is as an underquilt for hammocks. It can be easily attached underneath, providing insulation from cold air and the ground for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Travel blanket: Fully spread out, the Swagman Roll is a lightweight travel blanket – perfect for picnics or adding warmth inside a tent. Its compact size makes it easy to pack and carry.

Lightweight and compact

Weighing only about 750 grams and folding down to a small size (33 x 18 cm), the Swagman Roll is very portable. This feature is crucial for those needing to minimize backpack weight while maximizing space. Instead of carrying multiple items, this single product meets various needs, making it an efficient choice for any outdoor adventure.

Durable and weather-resistant

Constructed from high-quality nylon with Climashield Apex® insulation, the Swagman Roll is designed to withstand outdoor conditions while providing excellent thermal efficiency. Its moisture-resistant properties ensure quick drying and warmth retention even in damp environments, making it suitable for diverse weather scenarios.

Swagman Roll Poncho: comfort on all sides

Another option is the Swagman Roll Basic, appealing to outdoor enthusiasts seeking a budget-friendly version. This poncho can also function as an outer layer, standalone sleeping bag, insulating liner for other sleeping bags, or quilt under a hammock. It is filled with thick polyester insulation and offers excellent protection against thermal discomfort during spring or autumn camping trips. An adjustable strap and buckle closure allow easy fitting to the user’s body shape while the hood shields against cold winds. The Basic version weighs around one kilogram and fits easily into any backpack, available in various color options.

We now offer the popular Swagman Roll poncho in earthy bushcraft colors and vibrant outdoor shades. So far, we have introduced single-sided versions in iconic camouflage patterns: Desert Night Camo, US Woodland, Pencott Wildwood, Tiger Stripe, and Flecktarn. The reversible Swagman Roll is the next logical step in the evolution of our poncho.

The Reversible Swagman Roll combines features of the standard version but includes different camouflage patterns on each side. We selected popular camouflage designs to create three reversible sets with various functions. The version featuring Pencott Wildwood and Pencott Snowdrift camouflages effectively blends into both green terrain and snowy landscapes. Meanwhile, Mitchell Camo Leaf and Mitchell Camo Clouds are ideal for deciduous forests in spring and autumn. Desert Night Camo and U.S. Desert combine two iconic patterns into one – a nod to the reversible jackets worn by special forces in Afghanistan.

Summary

The Swagman Roll Poncho is not just another piece of camping gear. It’s a versatile tool that enhances comfort and convenience during outdoor activities. Whether hiking or enjoying nights under the stars, this poncho will become an essential part of your kit. With its versality and lightweight design that saves space, it’s clear why the Swagman Roll is indispensable for camping.
